In January 2009, the German NGO Welthungerhilfe initiated an electrification project with Contained Energy in the Village of Paya Bili, near Banda Aceh in North Sumatra. After a troubled past, the area was left without electricity. Welthungerhilfe hired CE to install Solar Home Systems (SHS) for 78 houses in the Village, including the local mosque.
Each SHS includes a 55 Wp photovoltaic panel which charges a maintenance free power storage system. The “maintenance free” feature is very important in these kinds of projects. High quality and products with long-life cycles are essential in order to avoid costs for the initiator, as well as the local people. The energy produced is enough to light an average small-village home.
