Sustainable energy, water and ice, from wind, sun and sea: household-scale energy and water solutions for islanders and other remote communities.
Pilot Projects On 1000 Islands
Contained Energy and YE Water Program, in association with “Engineers Without Borders” and a group of senior Mechanical Engineering students at Virginia Tech University, are developing a multi-phased pilot project to provide clean energy, drinking water and refrigeration to a fishing community in the Pulau Seribu (1000 Islands) group off the coast of Jakarta, Indonesia.
In Phase I (6 months), various prototypes and systems for ‘harvesting’ wind and solar energy, and for using that same energy for lighting, water-making and refrigeration, possibly even transport, will be installed, tried and tested on a nearby private island (www.pulaumacan.com) and in Phase II (12 months), selected of these systems will be installed, and monitored, on Pulau Kelapa, which has a fishing community of around 2000.
A possible Phase III would consist of ongoing research and development of clean water/energy systems, with a small research station, doubling as education/visitors facility, in eco-lodge setting on location.
An extensive web site will cover progress and results, with web cams on location on the ‘wish-list’
Total project costs are estimated at US$25,000 for Phase I and US$100,000 for Phase II. A possible Phase III would include a center for research and education in an eco-lodge setting.
We hope to commence Phase I on January 01, 2005 (and Phase II on July 01, 2005) and are currently inviting expressions of interest from sponsors, donateurs (of money, materials or equipment) and volunteers, to help us realize this project.
