When considering renewable energy systems for residences, be they small remote homes or residential villas, there may be various (combinations of) motivations:
- Wanting to ‘go green’
- Needing additional power
- Needing better power quality and consistency
- Reducing electricity bills
- Wanting to market a property as ‘special’
- There’s no other way (no grid and no genset or fuel)
Each of these motivations has an impact on how choices are made towards the most sensible solutions.
Usually, the sequence of ‘sensible’ systems to be considered follow the following pattern:
- Solar water heating. This is almost a no-brainer in the Tropics. Why buy energy to create heat?
- Solar Pool- and Well-Pumping. These are big loads that HAVE to run every day (but only DURING the day) and can be powered by solar-direct, avoiding the need for batteries.
- Grid-tie Systems that feed solar power straight into the house-grid during the day (without battery losses) and reduce the energy bought from the grid.
- Battery-based systems that store energy harvested during the day in battery banks for use during the night.
Whichever way one goes, one of the most important aspects of a sensible solution is ‘energy saving’ - it is ALWAYS better and cheaper to invest in highly efficient (LED) lighting and appliances (AC’s, fridges, fans), than to try and solar power any old equipment.
